You’ve probably used AI at least three times today. Maybe more. You just didn’t call it that.
When your phone autocompleted a text message, that was AI. When Netflix suggested a show you ended up watching, that was AI. When your email quietly moved a suspicious message to your spam folder before you ever saw it — AI again. It’s been working in the background of your life for years. The reason everyone is suddenly talking about it is that it just got a lot more visible.
So what actually is it? At its core, AI — artificial intelligence — is software that learns from patterns. Feed it enough examples of something, and it starts to recognize that thing on its own. Show it a million pictures of dogs, and eventually it can identify a dog in a photo it’s never seen before. Show it billions of sentences written by humans, and it starts to understand how language works well enough to hold a conversation, answer questions, or write a paragraph that sounds like a person wrote it. That’s not magic. It’s math — a lot of it, running very fast.
The version of AI most people are encountering now — tools like ChatGPT, Google’s Gemini, or the AI built into your iPhone — is called generative AI. It doesn’t just recognize patterns. It creates things. Text, images, code, music. You type a question, it generates an answer. You describe a picture, it draws one. Whether the output is any good depends entirely on what you’re asking for and how much you know about checking the result.
Here’s what AI is genuinely good at right now: sorting through large amounts of information quickly, recognizing patterns humans would miss, drafting a first version of something, and handling repetitive tasks without getting tired. It can summarize a long document in seconds. It can write a decent first draft of an email. It translates between languages well enough to be useful.
Here’s what it isn’t good at: knowing when it’s wrong. This is the part most people don’t realize. AI doesn’t fact-check itself. It generates responses that sound confident whether or not they’re accurate. It can hallucinate — that’s the actual term researchers use — which means it makes things up and presents them as true. It also has no real understanding of context, nuance, or consequences. It doesn’t know you. It only knows what you typed.
None of that means you should ignore it. AI is genuinely useful, and it’s not going anywhere. But useful tools have always required some understanding to get the most out of them. A hammer is useful. A circular saw is more useful. Neither one does the thinking for you.
Treat AI the same way. Know roughly what it does, understand where it fails, and use it accordingly. That puts you ahead of most people already.
